The mindset shifts that changed everything, and how to start your own.
I used to think survival mode was strength.
I wore exhaustion like a badge.
I could hold everything together, remember every detail, fix every problem, anticipate every mood in the room.
But I wasn’t strong.
I was stuck.
I was silently drowning under the weight of things no one could see.
Survival Mode Looks Normal on the Outside
You wake up and do what needs to be done.
You care for the kids, keep the peace, push down the resentment, and smile when people ask how you are.
But inside?
You’re flat. Numb. Tense.
You second-guess everything.
You snap at your kids and then cry about it after.
You fantasize about running away, not because you don’t love your life, but because you’ve disappeared inside it.
Sound familiar?
That is how I describe my own experience of getting through each day. It is not a diagnosis of what you are experiencing.
And it’s not your fault.
What No One Tells You Is… Survival Becomes a Habit
In my own experience, I found myself expecting the next difficult moment.
For the next disappointment.
For the next emotional outburst.
For the next wave of shame or silence.
Eventually, you don’t even notice you’re holding your breath.
My Quiet Uprising Began With a Whisper
It wasn’t a big breakdown.
It was a quiet moment in the car when I realized I hadn’t heard my own thoughts in weeks.
It was asking:
What if I don’t have to keep living like this?
What if chaos isn’t love?
What if motherhood doesn’t have to mean martyrdom?
What if practical support and changes around me could make more room to think?
Here’s What Changed Everything:
1. I Stopped Reacting and Started Responding
Not everything deserved my energy.
I began noticing where I was always on high alert and choosing to pause.
2. I Took Responsibility Without Blame
Yes, I was shaped by pain. But I realized I had a choice: keep repeating it… or start rewriting it.
3. I Practised a Kinder Inner Voice
The old soundtrack? “You’re not enough. You’re too much. You’re failing.”
Now?
“You’re human. You’re healing. You’re allowed to grow.”
4. I Asked for Support
This one was hard.
But when I stopped pretending I was fine and started getting real help, everything shifted.
Self-Leadership Isn’t Loud. It’s Devoted.
It’s not about having all the answers.
It’s about choosing to respond with love, even when the world trained you in fear.
It’s about showing your kids how to regulate, repair, and rise by watching you do it first.
It’s about saying, “This ends with me.”
If You’re Still in Survival… Let This Be Your Invitation.
Not to do more.
But to do it differently.
You don’t have to be perfect to begin.
You just have to be willing.
